This project grew out of a postgraduate innovation research project at Goldsmiths, University of London in the summer of 2010. Through our retail shop and styling work, we discovered that people had a desire for a meaningful experience when they engaged in retail transactions and that the closer we could bring the design and history of the objects into the experience, the more enriching it would be. So we developed the concept of a online retail platform using the power of photography, audio, visual media and social networking to tell the story of the modern artisans.

Academic research led to intrigue when I was introduced to this film, by a university lecturer, whilst researching artisans and sustainable practices, for my course in innovation in practice at Goldsmiths University in London.

It is a film about mastery, by Italian-American film maker Tao Ruspoli. Unfortunately it has never been released, but there are six trailers if you explore further, that are beautiful and will leave you dying to see more… Mr Ruspoli if you are listening please can we have more.

Searching for mastery has led me on a fascinating journey of discovering unknown unknowns. It was this short film that really inspired me to start my search in earnest and I soon became aware that there was a brave new world of inspiring thought on revolutionary practices emerging, redefining how we engage with our selves and our environment. The ‘slow movement’ is one such development based on the philosophy that doing things thoughtfully and expertly is necessary for our resource depleting consumer culture to re balance itself. Although not a blood member yet, this gentle and considered philosophy stirred my interest instantly .

‘Slow’ for those who don’t know, is the opposite of fast and is the new buzz word of the new decade. Or in fashion speak, ‘slow is the new fast’ and according to The world institute of slowness, ‘’We are not rats and life is not a race!’’ (‘’curiouser and curiouser!’’ cried Alice)

The the thrill of finding talented individuals and innovative organisations dedicated to their passion, usually on the edges of culture and society, unconcerned about being ‘found’, led me to think about what it is that inspires, that gives meaning and joy? Is it the thrill of possibility? Of becoming better and better until mastery and excellence is achieved?

The 1920’s philosopher, Martin Heidegger is famously quoted for saying “The possible ranks higher than the actual.’’

Striving for excellence is a concept I’ve been brought up to respect. It is something my father, who became a world renown geneticist in-spite of growing up in a small village in West Africa, fiercely and lovingly advocated most of my life and it’s the element of striving that he celebrates in even the smallest successes.

Excellence; (ˈɛksələns) Late 14c., from Fr. excellence, from L. excellentia , from excellentem

The state or quality of excelling or being exceptionally good; extreme merit; superiority. (Oxford English Dictionary)

The best antidote to racism. (Dr. F.I.D. Konotey-Ahulu my father)

Inspired with vicarious excellence I voyage on like a merchant sailor of a bygone age, unveiling a network of artisan’s, musician’s, sustainable and ethical designers, and ecological organisations who are reaching out beyond the limits of possibility in their work and practices.

This platform offers an opportunity to buy some beautiful unique products resulting from collaborative design with artists and makers in even remote parts of the globe. Available to members only of Once online.

How exciting is this new label by Mick Lindberg called ‘Nondo’. It epitomises Tablet’s passion for beautiful things that are beautifully made. It is also the perfect beginning for our narrative on weaving and textiles which has instinctively always been the basis of our decision to buy the collections we buy, but has now crystallized into a philosophy, through which we can support women weaver communities and designers innovating with traditional materials world wide. Under the label ‘Moth’ Mick Lindberg has been selling her exquisitely hand embroided cashmere jackets to Colette in Paris and Browns in London for years. Some customers collect them as one would collect precious gem stones. Also a well respected photographer, Mick sourced the fabric for this latest collection whilst she was working in Tanzania, east Africa. She has used the traditional Kanga cloth, with its distinctly floral patterned prints to compliment her elegantly simple summer dress. Each dress section is hand cut to cleverly place the pattern and swahili proverb precisely in the right place – on the halter neck or across the hem. ’Nondo’ means ‘moth’ in swahili. Everything about it is perfect.!
Beverly Craven still sounding amazing since her well loved ‘Promise Me’ hit of the Eighties. Last spring, she started touring to promote her new album ‘Close to home’. Beverly has been out of the spotlight for some time, “In 2005, Beverley was diagnosed with breast cancer. The devastating news forced her to re-evaluate her life and, as the mother of three young daughters, she was thrown into turmoil as she prepared for life-saving treatment. “I think, without sounding too poetic, having a brush with death has made me feel more alive,” she says. “In many ways it has been a positive thing, it has given me a new lease of life.” With a clear sense of identity and image she wanted to portray to the public, Beverly wasn’t looking for a complete new look, just a bit of inspiration.
